Glacier Hiking in Alaska

"After completing a class, I was taken by helicopter to a large glacier and met with my guide. Hiking on a glacier can be very dangerous. You have to learn how to walk on the ice, which is solid and very slippery in most areas. Crampons and a pick are essential tools. If you slip and fall into one of the naturally formed air tubes in the ice, you could descend hundreds of feet into the ice within seconds. Needless to say, I was very careful and followed the guide."
