Drogon 2.4.9 Quadcopter Frame

187g

This frame is the next step in evolution from my Drogon v2.4.6 frame. It is a 650mm class quadcopter frame, designed for 15-inch propellers. It should have flight times around 45 minutes with a GoPro 6 and a 8000mAh Lipo battery.

Drogon v2.4.9 has the following differences:
- Uses 15mm square tubing for arms, instead of round.
- The front arms are at 90 degrees, like an H-frame.
- The rear arms are angled back to 54 degrees.
- The motors are in a trapezoid, like the DJI Mavic Pro.
- Configuration is better suited to a front mounted camera.
- Both the top and bottom plates are full length.

The arms will use 15mm square tubing, which is heavier but will not require motor mounts. The initial calculated weight is 179g (not counting glue), which is 39g heavier than v2.4.6. But, in order for v2.4.6 to be lighter overall, each motor mount would need to weigh 9g or less. This is certainly possible with custom, 3D printed mounts but I couldn't find any commercially available motor mounts less than 14g each.

Another advantage of the 15mm square tubing is increased stiffness. The square tubing is almost twice as stiff as the round tubing used in the v2.4.6 frame. See a comparison of similar sized tubing for this frame.

This design is ready to go! I've made a number of short videos showing how to assemble it: Build a Drone from Scratch PLAYLIST
